Crowds Gathering in Oatman for 4th of July Sidewalk Egg-Frying Contest

Oatman, Arizona, a short, scenic drive from Laughlin will hold their 19th annual 4th of July Egg-Frying contest at high noon. With the heat in these parts of the woods during the summer months it is not impossible to actually fry an egg on the hot cement and participants will get the chance to do just that in this free yearly event. Side-walk chefs, whether working in teams or alone, are supplied two eggs by the Chamber of Commerce plus one for a backup. Egg chefs are given
15 minutes to fry the egg directly on foil, using a magnifying glass, solar panel, or any other clever idea they can come up with. The only no-no is that you cannot use direct fire of any kind. This includes lighters, matches, candles, etc. Medals and prizes will be awarded in a number of categories such as the most creative result; the youngest contestant and the competitor traveling the furthest to compete. Participants are encouraged to get creative and come in any type of crazy costume for the egg challenge. Normally the contest brings in about 20 contestants and over 1,500 spectators line the street and cheer them on. Even if you are not involved in the actual egg frying, I promise you that it is a fun afternoon to watch the mayhem going on during the contest. Following the egg contest, the Gunfighters Reunion will keep the pace going with a fast-drawing "shoot out" along Main Street. Food will be available and entertainment will be provided during the event. Watch your step for "surprises" as you walk around the streets because the large wild burro population will be out in force. For more information, call the chamber at (928) 768-6222 or (928) 458-0497.
