                                     I-15 TRAFFIC UP

                  NOVEMBER AIRLINE PASSENGER COUNTS

                TOURISM SPENDING ON RECOVERY TRACK

  TRAFFIC REPORT - NOVEMBER 2009

I-15 at California/Nevada Stateline (Primm, Nevada)   Vehicle counts on I-15 measured at the Nevada/California state line, showed increases in all three categories.  Average Daily Traffic was +1.8%, Weekday +1.3% and Weekend     + 3.1%.  Year-to-date count is +4.1%.  For the four day Thanksgiving holiday, traffic on the 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th totaled 124,696, off 2% from a comparable period last year. For November weekend northbound Friday, the 6th and Saturday, the 7th was -5%, the 13th and 14th +10%, the 20th and 21st -12%.

Same day of the week comparison for northbound traffic showed +5%; southbound +2% and total in both directions +5%.  This increase across the board was primarily because the day-for-day comparison picks up an extra Sunday this year.

Laughlin, Nevada (SR163, Davis Dam Road)    The month showed good increases with Average Daily Traffic up 2.5%, Weekday +2% and Weekend +3.5%.

For the Thanksgiving holiday, traffic into Laughlin on S.R. 163 over the four-day holiday period, starting on the 25th through the 28th, was +.05%.  The other weekends were about average with Friday traffic averaging 3,400 eastbound vehicles and Saturday traffic 2,600.

U.S. 95  at Searchlight, .5 miles north of SR 164, Nipton Road    On U.S. 95, measured north of Searchlight, traffic was off in all the measurements.  Average Daily Traffic:  -0.6% Weekday -1%, Weekend -4.5%.

McCARRAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT REPORT - October 2009   November turned out to be a tourniquet that stopped the bleeding at McCarran International.  The total of arriving and departing passengers showed a 0.1% increase.  The difference was a total of 1,720 passengers more than November of 2008.  The year-to-date (YTD) total still stands at -8.7%.

Among the top five scheduled carriers, Southwest and American showed increases of +9.3% and +5.4% respectively.  This brought American +5.4% YTD and Southwest is still -1.7%   Some of the shift to Southwest may be due to passengers going from US Airways, who have nearly discontinued service, to Southwest.  U.S. Airways was -34.8% in November and is -33.8% YTD.  The other two dominant scheduled carriers, United and   Delta, were  both down in November;  United -10.1%, Delta -3.6%.  This puts United    -7.6% YTD and Delta -5.5% YTD.

Chris Jones the Public Information Administrator for the Department of Commerce, commenting on the November figures, said, "A slight gain is better than no gain and is better than a loss."  He went on to say, "However, it's one month's data and one month of flat figures should not be construed as a trend."

Bijan Vasige, Managing Director at Aviation Consulting Group, reported that he was encouraged by signs of economic stabilization and expects airline capacity to return to pre-recession levels in late 2010.  Vasige's comments were made prior to the recent episode on the Northwest flight coming into Detroit from Amsterdam and the impact of increased security for international passengers and on general airlines travel has yet to be seen.

Totals for the airport showed scheduled carriers out of Terminal #1 -2.2% in November and -7.4% YTD.  Charter flights through Terminal #1 are -85% YTD; and those scheduled out of Terminal #2 -16.9% YTD and charters through Terminal #2 -52.7% YTD.

GAMING REVENUE REPORT - OCTOBER 2009   Statewide win in all of the venues in Clark County were in double digit negative figures for the month.  Statewide win was -11.6% and -13.1% in the trailing twelve months (TTM).  Clark County win was $673 million, down from $757 million in 2008, an -11.1%. Market share (percentage of statewide gaming win) held steady at 84%. The County win is -12.8% TTM.

Downtown took the biggest hit, with win -16.4% and share dropping to 5% from 5.3% last year.  Downtown is -10.6% TTM.

The Strip win was -10.3%.  Share took a big drop to 46.8% from 52.4% last year.  Win is  -3.6% TTM.

Laughlin win was -19.1% vs -12% last month.  Share dropped slightly from last year and stands at 4.6% vs 5% last year.

TWO RESORTS TO ADD ROOMS IN ADDITION TO MGM MIRAGE'S OPENING OF CITY CENTER Planet Hollywood announced the opening of 1,200 rooms in the new PH Tower and the Hard Rock Hotel is opening 374 rooms in the HRH Tower. Both scheduled openings are in time for the New Year's holiday, both resorts looking at high end customers.  The Hard Rock Hotel chief, Randy Kwazniewski, commented that the new tower was a part of the $750 million expansion aimed at attracting customers looking for a "boutique experience" - different from the 450 Paradise Tower which opened in July.

TERRESTRIAL RADIO STILL #1 CHOICE   In a report on competitive media uses the Bridge Rating Report says that 93.2% of Americans listen to radio in an average week, for an average of five minutes or longer. This is plus sixty million Americans who listen to some form of internet radio in a typical week.  The report is an update to Bridge's Media Usage Report first published in January 2007 and is based on 3,500 personal interviews.  The highest listening is among adults 25-54 with 96% listenership, a level just slightly below person 25-34.

VISITOR COUNT INCREASES   October visitor counts were up 3.7% compared with slightly 3 million in October of 2008.  This follows a 4.3% jump in September, the first monthly increase since May 2008.

With visitor counts increasing and car counts on I-15 +4.1% YTD and +1.8% in October, while McCarran Airport arrivals and departures are down -8.7% YTD, it is obvious that increases in visitor count have to be coming by surface transportation.

TOURISM SPENDING REBOUNDS SLIGHTLY   The Commerce Department reported that tourism spending rebounded in the third quarter, but hovered below pre-recession levels.  The higher cost of fuel prices, to the airlines, contributed to the high overall tourism spending, which was up 6.4% on an inflation adjusted annual rate; this is after rising 0.2% the second quarter. Travelers spent $587 billion in the third quarter, below the $619 billion spent in the third quarter of 2007, before the recession officially began.

Leisure travel, in addition to business travel, increased in the third quarter with a 26.3% jump in annual rate increase in air travel.

Accommodations spending climbed 17%; this included hotels and was primarily due to leisure travel that was motivated by cheaper room rates.  This was a drop of 4.7% in the third quarter.

  Air prices were up 2.1%.
